India can make it, if and only if they beat Sri Lanka in the match coming up on Friday, 23rd March 2007. And, as we wait to watch this match coming up tomorrow, lets lighten up some tension by checking out some extremely interesting resources on History of the World Cup.
The First Cricket World Cup Ever …
…was hosted in 1975 by England. Named after the sponsors, Prudential plc, the matches in this cup consisted of 60 six-ball overs per team.
Eight teams participated in the first tournament: Australia, England, the West Indies, New Zealand, India, and Pakistan, together with Sri Lanka and a composite team from East Africa This tournament was won by the West Indies, who defeated Australia by 17 runs in the final at Lords.
In 1979, the ICC Trophy competition was introduced, to select non-Test playing teams for the World Cup. Two teams that qualified in this year for participating in the World Cup were Sri Lanka and Canada. Here again, the West Indies won, defeating hosts, England, by 92 runs in the final.
At a meeting following this World Cup, the International Cricket Conference agreed to make the competition a quadrennial (once in four years) event.
Hosted by England for a third consecutive time, the Cup in 1983 saw Zimbabwe also qualify to participate. This was the year in which India, led by Kapils Devils brought home the World Cup.
Lets now take a look at the winners and the runner-ups of all the World Cups that have happened to date.
